KENNEDY CLASSIFICATION

Class 1:

Bilateral edentulous spaces located posterior to the remaining natural teeth.

Class 2:

Unilateral edentulous space located posterior to the remaining natural teeth.

Class 3:

Unilateral edentulous area with natural teeth located both anterior and posterior to it .

Class 4:

A single but bilateral (crossing the midline) edentulous area located anterior to the remaining natural teeth.

Class 5:

An edentulous area bound by teeth anteriorly and posteriorly, but where the anterior teeth is not suitable to be used as abutment.

Class 6:

An edentulous situation where the bounded teeth are capable of total support of the prosthesis. 

Applegate's Rules

RULE 1

Classification should follow rather than precede extraction of teeth that might alter the original  classification.

RULE 2

If a 3rd molar is missing and not to be replaced,  it is not considered in the classification.

RULE 3

If a 3rd molar is present and is to be used as an abutment , it is considered in the classification.

RULE 4

If a 2nd molar is missing and is not to be replaced, it is not to be replaced, it is not considered in the classification.

RULE 5

The most posterior edentulous space determines the classification.

RULE 6

The edentulous areas other than those determining the classification are referred to as modification spaces and are designated by their number. 

RULE 7

The extent of the modification is not considered, only the number of additional edentulous areas.

RULE 8

There can be no modification spaces in Class 4 arches.
